Wildlife

GetKnotty is in the mountains. It is in the forest. There is wildlife. Be aware and be smart.

Quick rules:

  1. Be aware of your surroundings.

  2. Make noise when you are walking in nature.

  3. Keep trash locked up in the house or in the bear boxes.

  4. Do not feed or leave food out for wildlife.

  5. Never approach wildlife.

  6. Consider carrying bear spray and know how to use it.

  7. Research safety precautions from reputable websites.

OK, our ducks you can feed and experience. Wilma is the white Pekin duck and she will eat from you if you have a cup of duck food. But she does eat agressively and that might scare children.

Its best to give them a pile of food on the bank / edge of the water, back up, and let them come and eat.

DO NOT FEED THEM BREAD.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PET THEM.
DO NOT FEED THEM DIRECTLY FROM THE CAR.

The best foods include:

Cracked corn

Wheat, barley, or similar grains

Oats (uncooked; rolled or quick)

Rice (plain white or brown, cooked or uncooked, whole or instant)

Birdseed (any type or mix)

Grapes (cut in half or quartered if very large)

Nut hearts or pieces (any type but without salt, coatings, or flavoring)

Frozen peas or corn (defrosted, no need to cook)

Earthworms (fishing bait or dug from the garden)

Mealworms (fresh or dried)

Chopped lettuce or other greens or salad mixes

Vegetable trimmings or peels (chopped into small pieces)

Duck feed pellets or poultry starter pellets. (Poultry feed from Co-op or Tractor Supply)
